The velvet beetle (Chlaenius costulatus) is a beetle that belongs to the family of ground beetles. It is mainly found in the northern parts of the country. It has a body length of up to 12 millimeters. The carapace is beautifully shiny metallic in green, copper and purple. Antennae and legs are black. The velvet beetle loves moisture and likes to live in lush bogs, with tufts of white moss and vegetation of water clover, sedge and horsetail. It is a predator that is active during the day. In Sweden, the velvet beetle is endangered. The greatest threat to the species is the drainage of wetlands and peat mining. It is the Norrbotten landscape insect
Objects as patterns and patterns as objects. The fact that the two-dimensional pattern grows up and gets a three-dimensional body makes the experience of the place stronger. The bronze sculpture is small but still big for being a beetle. Something small in a big place might arouse a caring thought, there is something human about it.
The Splendid Velvet Runner is a design that has been developed for Hertsö Centrum outside Luleå. The design consists of a corten steel grid on a stormwater gutter with a total length of 151 m and a small bronze sculpture about 20 cm. The overall design of the center was made by Tema in Stockholm, responsible landscape architect Sara Vikstrand. Commissioned by Luleå Municipality. Inaugurated in the fall of 2013.
